Puppies welcome me home – Digging
Might 29, 2023
Have you ever observed it has been a little bit quiet round right here? should you comply with my instagram, you already know I joined my husband this spring on a 5 week RV journey to see nationwide parks in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. (Discover my Instagram tales concerning the journey in my highlights at national parks.) The parks have been elegant, majestic, teeming with eye-popping wildlife (grizzlies, bison, moose and extra) – all issues we had hoped to see. The drive – 6,500 miles of it! – it was enjoyable (a lot of podcasts and studying aloud), tedious (so many. miles), thrilling (we drove down a dust street that clung to a gorge with a chasm on one facet and no guardrails), irritating (we handled two totally different tire blowouts in our rented trailer) and peaceable (that iconic western setting).
In brief, it was an journey.
We pulled into our driveway final Tuesday, road-weary and desirous to get residence, and located {that a} doe – possibly two – had taken over the entrance yard as a nursery.

A pair of twins and maybe one other single deer are sleeping within the backyard, ready for his or her moms to return from just a few hours of grazing. We spooked them just a few occasions after our return, unintentionally making them soar throughout the road right into a neighbor’s bushes.

They appear extra used to us now. One afternoon I noticed the twins in our driveway, staying near their mom but in addition exploring a bit and nibbling, as they do.

Their mom quickly despatched them to mattress, watching as they made their strategy to the gravel backyard between the storage and the home…

… the place they knelt awkwardly and tucked themselves into mattress on gnarled stones. We peeked at them from the corridor bathtub window.

The gloriously gentle, wet spring that central Texas skilled whereas I used to be gone turned the roads right into a kaleidoscope of orange, yellow, and purple wildflowers. It additionally labored its magic in my backyard, filling in most of the gaps from two harsh winters and final summer season. Right here is the raised serpentine mattress behind the home, a purple skullcap flower, ‘Ellen’s Legacy’ crimson cistus (I am making an attempt a brand new one), hesperaloe, lanceleaf manta flower and aloe vera. A cheerful sight to return residence to.

one other view

A pink rain lily emerged amid ‘Everillo’ sedge, with ibis, feisty mangave and ‘Amistad’ sage behind.

On deck, small potted succulents appear to be having fun with the gentle climate as effectively. From left to proper: agave ‘Cream Spike’, mangave ‘Bloodspot’ and agave Leopold (I believe).

Flushed leaves echo an orange chaise longue.

The datura close to the again porch made a risk-level transfer to take over the whole mattress. Final evening, a dozen or so tubes unfurled like brilliant spotlights. That is the morning after, with the flowers nonetheless open beneath an overcast sky.

It’s now formally summer season. Hopefully it is as comparatively gentle as spring right here in Texas.
I will be posting concerning the nationwide parks and monuments we go to as I’ve time. I can not wait to share my favourite photos with you!
