Layers of natural beauty, predator and prey, in the art of Julia Lucey

I am In Love With The Californian Artist’s Enchanting Artwork Julia Luceywho at the moment shows her mixed-media collages at Austin’s Wally Workman Gallery. I went to see them on Tuesday and I used to be entranced by each, seeing hidden particulars unfold amidst breathtaking colours and floral exuberance.

Most of the items reverse the motif of a hidden predator. Lucey’s predators – coyote, otter, lynx – look straight at you, fearless, whereas their prey – rabbits, fish – circle, partially disguised and silhouetted amongst leaves and flowers.

Lucey constructs her fable-like worlds by making etchings in aquatint, printing them, slicing out parts by hand and pasting them, layer upon layer.

Wildflowers, leafy bushes and wild creatures that make their properties among the many flora come to curious life below your gaze.

About Lucey’s website she writes, “A few of the collages reference scientific papers I’ve examine animal habits and ecology. In different collages, I set the animal’s gaze in the direction of the judgmental observer. And in others, the items are merely concerning the magical feeling of being in a wild area.”

You’ll find out extra about her work at an interview in cultivating place with podcaster Jennifer Jewell, recorded in 2018. There I found that Lucey displays her work each January on the Wally Workman Gallery.

If you happen to’re in Austin and need to see Lucey’s work, or perhaps even purchase one (I would be jealous!), go proper now. The exhibition ends on the twenty ninth of January.

What goes with artwork? Tacos! After the gallery go to, my companions and I drove to Littlefield’s charming courtyard in Tarrytownthe place we devoured scrumptious grilled fish tacos and migas tacos from All Natural Veracruz below a lovely blue sky and an arbor hung with moon-shaped icicles. An ideal morning in ATX.
